On periods and productivity

Updated 29 April 2025

Something that’s been sticking with me for a little while now is how your menstrual cycle can affect your productivity. I’ve never paid too much attention to my period and how it affects my mood - I’ve just treated it as an annoying fact of life, really. But since I started using an Apple Watch I realised it’s very good at tracking your cycle via the wrist temperature. My body temp jumps up 0.5°C during my luteal phase, and then there is a sharp drop the day before or on my period begins.

And once I can actually see what stage of my cycle I’m at, it makes it a little easier to correlate those to my changing moods and so on.

I used to read a lot of productivity blogs when I was younger (not that I was ever that productive) and I feel like a lot of big names in the productivity space are all men. At least the ones I come across, anyway. And I suppose the advice they give is seemingly gender-neutral, but in actual fact maybe gender should play into it a little more.
